Set Them Free
A few weekends ago we had the pleasure of attending the event Set Them Free Off-Road, an event hosted by Set Them Free to help rescue and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking. This event is held at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds in Salida, CO. JC’s has proudly sponsored this event for the last 3 years. The funds they raise from this event, last year’s Set Them Free Off-Road raised more than $80,000, go towards funding trusted organizations that rescue and restore victims, as well as work to change local and national human trafficking legislation.
Last year’s event was my first interaction with Set Them Free, it was a very awakening experience. We had close to 400 participants all there for the same purpose: to help put an end to human trafficking. The weekend registration fees include 2 days of trails, dinner Friday and Saturday nights, and breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday night’s dinner also includes live entertainment and a silent auction, proceeds go directly towards the rescue efforts. It was during this dinner that I truly realized how close to home this epidemic is.
Co-founder Gianni Vecchiarelli spoke of victims being kidnapped from our own neighborhoods here in the Denver metro, not to mention the thousands across the country and the rest of the world. Stories of the conditions these victims are found in, the horrors they have seen. These terrifying accounts were then followed with the amazing rehabilitation efforts. Women and children rescued and brought back to facilities like one here in Denver, Hope Academy. These girls are brought to these safe places to heal and help them adapt to their new lives. Some of the silent auction items are paintings and jewelry made by these girls.
While the majority of participants are Jeep owners, the event encourages all vehicles willing to attend. The trails available range from a scenic mountain drive on dirt to more extreme trails such as Carnage Canyon. Camping is available on site or hotels are available in the town of Salida. As the event keeps growing, we want to help encourage participation both for this event and its cause. While Set Them Free Off-Road 2018 is already in the books, look for JC’s early next spring for more information on 2019’s event. We would love to see more Rovers at this event.
