With the recent release of the New Defender, I was lucky enough to be invited on a trail ride with one of the demo vehicles from Land Rover Denver. They had already done a little outfitting of this one with a 2” air suspension lift and larger 275/60R20 BFG AT tires. We met at the Chinaman Gulch trailhead just outside Buena Vista Colorado Sunday morning. It was a cool dry morning following a pretty good rain the night before which really cut down on the dust on the trail and offered incredibly clear views of the surrounding sky and mountains. If you would have told me a year ago that a car brand would be a life changing motivator, I would have told you that you were crazy. Since immersing myself in the Land Rover brand, I have found it to be so much more than just a vehicle.  Rather a true extension of an adventurous lifestyle.  The History of Land Rover and its dedicated followers really caught my attention. So many seemingly ordinary people taking what started as a farm truck on epic ventures. I read about people like Barbara Toy who took her Series I, Pollyanna, on solo excursions through Africa, the Middle East, across Asia, and even around the world. New spy shots of a SWB (short wheel base) Defender test mule have prompted me to write down some of my thoughts on what the "new" Defender will and won't be.  First off, It is pretty clear that we should be expecting an independent suspension in any & all new products from Land Rover. While I personally lament the loss of solid axles under the new Defender, I understand the move by Land Rover doing so as it will allow enhanced drivability in all but the most extreme terrain. Yet, when matched with the amazing traction control system developed by Land Rover it will still surpass solid axles even in extreme terrain. The drawbacks are more related to the Series & Defender purists and those looking for major lift and build modifications to the vehicle, but we can rest assured that there will be individuals, shops, and manufacturers that will come to our aid in turning the new Defender into an off road beast. I’ve been wanting to put together an off-road trip for quite a while, and it finally came together with a little push from a long time customer. Thanks Dirk! Ok, I’m going to back up a second and explain why the name “Rover Riders” in the title. The Rover Riders were a club and group of Land Rover off-road enthusiasts that was started many years ago. That club was absorbed by the Solihull Society, the other and still current Land Rover club in Colorado, and the name was lost. I thought the name too cool to let go, and while I have no plans to create another (or competing) club, it was perfect to put it to use as a Facebook group This trip is the 1st time I created an event in that group, and invited some friends and customers of the shop. Did you know that your engine can be overheating with you even knowing it! Yes, that's potentially true – and can have dire consequences. Here's why, for a coolant sensor to be accurate, it must have coolant flowing past it. If you have a coolant leak or complete loss of coolant, your coolant temperature sensor and therefore gauge will not react properly. In the winter there are often some simple signs that your coolant is low, particularly you often will notice that your heater is not blowing hot air. But come summer, that little warning of no heat from your vents goes unnoticed, pair that with running the A/C which pumps even more heat into the engine, and you can have catastrophic engine failure come up faster than you realize. News An India based company called Tata has acquired Land Rover & Jaguar from Ford Motors, announced in March, the sale price was about $2.3billion. Only time will tell how this will affect the marquee, but they did get backing from both Rover & Jaguar workers unions, and have said they will hold true to tradition.
